Stop blitscaling unicorns - look out for (green) Zebras instead
13:00 - 13:30, 15th of October (Friday) 2021/ INSPIRE STAGE
Venture capital has been chasing startups to blitz-scale them into unicorns at least over the last ten years. While this approach has led to many financially successful companies (and exits for VCs), negative consequences for both society and the environment, for instance, have often been neglected. We will hear about some of the issues that 'blitscaling unicorns' produces - from a sexist brotopia to a servant economy - before diving into some alternative ways of 'doing startups'. Unlike unicorns, Zebras are real and come in different shapes or forms but always with a consideration for profit and purpose. I will make a case for why we need to focus specifically more on sustainability in today's environment ending with a strong call to rethink VC.
