Scaling Software Development via the Agile / Waterfall Continuum

Generally, modern developers think of Agile as the good/better software development methodology and Waterfall as the bad/older methodology. The truth is, though, there is a continuum between the two extremes and generally speaking the more you scale the more you need to tend to the Waterfall end of the scale.
