Cyborgs – Fantasy, Threat or Chance?

Cyborgs are a fusion of the human body with robotic technology. Cyborgs are not only a creation of Hollywood. They are already among us, in medical applications and even outside of the medical field. However, it remains still a great challenge to interface the fragile human body with modern technology. So far, most people with visual, auditory or movement disabilities are not yet satisfied with existing Cyborg solutions.  Retina implants do not allow to recognise people or allow reading. Cochlea implants make listening to speech difficult and to music aweful. Commercial leg prostheses are still passive making stair climbing  exhausting. Many people with arm amputations are not using their prosthetic devices, and commercial wheelchairs have still problems to encounter uneven terrain and steps. Therefore, I initiated the Cybathlon, an Olympic-style competition for athletes with physical disabilities who are using advanced robotic technologies. The main goal is to promote development of better technologies for the physically disabled person and encourage the exchange between people with disabilities, the general public and the research. The world first Cybathlon took place in 2016; the next one was on May 2/3 this year. Further championships will take place in the coming years.
